The event was hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tno.nl\/nl\/\">Center of Excellence for Data Sharing and Cloud<\/a> (TNO), <a href=\"https:\/\/internationaldataspaces.org\/\">International Data Spaces Association (IDSA)<\/a>, the Basic Data Infrastructure network (BDI) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dssc.eu\/\">Data Spaces Support Centre<\/a> (DSSC), boosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/data-spaces-business-alliance.eu\/\">Data Spaces Business Alliance<\/a> (DSBA), organized together with <a href=\"https:\/\/euhubs4data.eu\/\">EUHubs4Data<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mydata.org\/\">MyData Global<\/a> \u2013 all relevant data sharing initiatives and endeavors at one place.<\/p>\n<p>Data Spaces Symposium was an ideal event for getting involved in aligning the diverse landscape of data space initiatives, learning from successfully running data space projects and discovering the business benefits of sovereign data sharing.<\/p>\n<h2>Data spaces will be a paradigm shift!<\/h2>\n<p>The vision is to make all solutions interoperable with each other to create a successful European data service ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The main message was: <em>Get going and make the vision reality<\/em>. Many speakers highlighted the importance of FAIR, TRUST and CARE principles. Also (semantic) interoperability in and between data spaces was particularly emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some key learnings from the event:<\/p>\n<h2>Four layers of data spaces governance<\/h2>\n<p>Many experts agree that the Data Governance Act (DGA) has the potential to become a global standard for data usage. Being a central element of the European Strategy for Data, the DGA aims at establishing the concept of data sovereignty. There are four layers which are included when data space governance is framed:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;--awb-circlecolor:#ce0037;--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.08px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-1 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-angle-double-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><strong>Data space instance governance:<\/strong> Dedicated data space authority. Executes and implements the governance practices and rules of a data space instance Oversees data space functions and the rules<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-angle-double-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><strong>Data space ecosystem governance:<\/strong> Data sharing networks and data marketplaces. Defines the rules for the data space instance Creates the intra data space trust between collaborating organizations Complements standardization and regulation focusing on business-driven rules Defines the inter data space interoperability practices<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-angle-double-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><strong>Domain-specific soft infrastructure governance:<\/strong> Sector-specific principles and resources. Establishes sector-specific data space principles and mechanisms including semantic interoperability and domain-specific regulation Leaves room for geographical differences while supporting maximum interoperability.<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-angle-double-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\"><strong>Soft infrastructure governance:<\/strong> Neutral building blocks and core services. Brings all the generic data space building blocks and concepts together, defines the legal basis and creates the common framework on which all data spaces are built.<\/div><\/li><\/ul>\n<h2>Establishing trust in data space<\/h2>\n<p>A data space needs to define policies that specify what attributes an applicant must meet to become a trusted participant. This is achieved through <strong>Data Space Self-Description (DSSD). DSSD <\/strong>allows new members to provide attributes in their<strong> Participant Self-Description (PSD<\/strong>) in a format that can be understood by the <strong>Data Space Authority (DSA)<\/strong>. Deciding which<strong> trust anchors<\/strong> and <strong>trust frameworks<\/strong>, and thus which rules and procedures of issuing and validating attributes are used, is the responsibility of the DSA and of the participants of the data space.<\/p>\n<p>The DSA is responsible for:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Establishing the policies and rules of the data space<\/li>\n<li>Issuing membership credentials<\/li>\n<li>Regulating the lifecycle of membership (participant discoverability, issuing of membership credentials, verification services for membership proofs)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>DSA also provides other optional services: observability and auditing, brokering and marketplaces, providing vocabularies or other services required by the data space members.<\/p>\n<h2>3+1 rule for clear data space value cases<\/h2>\n<p>Dataspace solutions will only succeed if all components are in place.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"--awb-line-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-width:27.2px;--awb-icon-height:27.2px;--awb-icon-margin:11.2px;--awb-content-margin:38.4px;--awb-circlecolor:#ce0037;--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.08px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-2 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\"><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-asterisk fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Technology: Which Technology is used?<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-asterisk fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Application\/Service: What is the core idea? How to you realize it? How is the Technology applied?<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-asterisk fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Benefit: Whats the specific Value? Why does the customer need it?<\/div><\/li><li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-asterisk fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Customer\/Segment: What is the customer segment? Exisiting or new customer?<\/div><\/li><\/ul>\n<h2>Machine applications and data sharing<\/h2>\n<p>Producing companies currently face big hurdles, strict security regulations, imposed internally and externally. The challenge is to lower the hurdles by providing targeted solutions that give insights where data resides with what protection level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solutions shall implement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Communication mechanisms that can pass install<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A trusted infrastructure with machine vendor spec<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A way for the factory and\/or machine vendor to stay in control<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We were part of the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) annual conference which was packed with beautiful formats, breakout sessions with many insights and a dynamic social dinner. A personal highlight for us was that many of the other participants already knew DIO and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greendatahub.at\/\">Green Data Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"awb-gallery-wrapper awb-gallery-wrapper-1 button-span-no\" style=\"--more-btn-alignment:center;\"><div style=\"margin:-5px;--awb-bordersize:0px;\" class=\"fusion-gallery
