Data Act published for public consultation<\/a><\/h3>\n

The Commission has now published the\u00a0Data Act<\/a>\u00a0(and the\u00a0Chips Act<\/a>) for public consultation – Deadline is 9 May 2022.<\/p>\n

This initiative, known as the \u2018Data Act\u2019, aims to facilitate access to and use of data, including business-to business and business-to-government, and to review the rules on the legal protection of databases. It seeks the right balance between rights to access data and incentives to invest in data, without changing the current data protection rules.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Government access to personal data held by the private sector: Statement by the OECD Committee on Digital Economy Policy – OECD<\/a><\/h3>\n

The OECD Committee on Digital Economy Policy decided to conduct further work and examine the possibility of developing, as a matter of priority, high-level policy guidance for government access to personal data held by the private sector. On 22 December 2020, it\u00a0issued a statement<\/a>\u00a0that reflects its views and concerns related to this issue, and plans for the near future. South Wales Police Return With New Facial Recognition System Following Legal Defeat<\/a><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0South Wales Police department<\/a>\u00a0is preparing to resume its use of live facial recognition technology. The department first started\u00a0trialing face-based surveillance tech in 2017<\/a>, but\u00a0pulled back in 2020<\/a>\u00a0after the British Court of Appeal ruled that the South Wales system\u00a0violated human rights laws on several fronts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, that has not deterred the South Wales Police. The department is essentially viewing its defeat as part of the learning process, and claims that it has been able to use the Court\u2019s feedback to develop a surveillance system that will meet a stricter legal standard.\u00a0\u00a0#facial-recognition<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0#public-safety<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0#uk<\/a><\/p>\n
